NWSEO 2015 Elections – List of Delegates and Votes per Branch
September 14, 2015 print copy
(September 14, 2015) The 2015 NWSEO National Office Elections will take place at the NWSEO National Convention in Alexandria Virginia on Saturday and Sunday, September 26-27. This year, we are posting the names of the delegates from each branch on http://nwseo.org/convention.php. The delegates will attend the convention, vote on the issues on the convention agenda and participate in voting during this year’s election of NWSEO President, Vice President, and Secretary-Treasurer. If a delegate cannot attend the convention, the alternate delegate will cast the designated votes for the branch.
A delegate holds one vote for each NWSEO member in the branch represented. Please review this important information and report any updates and corrections to the Credentials Committee Member for that region. On the lists below, you will see the number of votes available at the branch the delegate who represents it. Please keep in mind that the delegate may not cast all of the available votes because any NWSEO member who attends the convention is entitled to cast their own vote (thus reducing the number of votes that the delegate will cast).
Credentials Committee Members
Jeanne Allen, Email: pawsaction@gmail.com, Central Region, Pacific Region, Western Region
Kevin Durfee, Email: durfkev844@gmail.com, Alaska Region, Eastern Region, Southern Region
Martin Lee, Email: lee55803@gmail.com, Headquarters Region, NCEP, NOAA Attorneys Guild, NESDIS
These preliminary results are subject to the NWSEO members in attendance at the NWSEO Convention. Each region’s page will be updated weekly as the votes for delegate are certified by the NWSEO Elections Credentials Committee.
The annual convention is open to all NWSEO members. You are encouraged to attend, participate in discussions, and vote. If you attend the convention and are not a delegate you will cast your own vote and the delegate for your branch will have one less vote to cast on behalf of your branch. For more information on the NWSEO National Office Elections and the National Convention, please read the NWSEO Elections Letter.
To submit updates, corrections, or changes to the delegate lists or branches, please contact the Credentials Committee Representative listed on that specific region’s Delegate Count Page by Tuesday, September 22, 2015.

Hawaii Senator Hirono accepts invitation to
Address NWSEO Convention
September 16, 2015
(September 16, 2015) Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI) will be the keynote speaker at the NWSEO National Convention in Alexandria, VA on Saturday, September 26. Senator Hirono is a strong supporter of NWSEO and has worked closely with our professional organization since her election to the U.S. Senate in 2012.
“We are honored to have Senator Hirono as our keynote speaker,” said NWSEO President Dan Sobien. “She consistently demonstrates her commitment to the dedicated employees of the National Weather Service. Time and again, Senator Hirono stresses the importance of accurate weather forecasting and emergency preparedness to keep people safe in severe weather.”
Senator Hirono is one of ten U.S. Senators who have a 100 percent pro-labor lifetime voting record, as scored by the AFL-CIO. She co-hosts the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s quarterly meeting for union legislative representatives, which is regularly attended by NWSEO’s Legislative Director. Senator Hirono is a co-sponsor of the “Federal Adjustment to Income Rates Act” which would provide a 3.8 percent pay raise for Federal employees in 2016.
Hirono served four terms in the House of Representatives, and as Hawaii’s Lieutenant Governor before being elected to the Senate.

Science Committee Leader and Federal Employee Advocate,
Rep. Don Beyer, to address NWSEO National Convention
August 14, 2015
(August 14, 2015) Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) will address NWSEO’s National Convention in Alexandria, Virginia on Sunday, September 27 at 10 a.m. All NWSEO members are invited and encouraged to attend.
Rep. Beyer is serving his first term in Congress and has taken a leadership role in advocating on behalf of the interests of NWS employees. He was one of three members of the House Science Committee to request the GAO to undertake a study of NWS understaffing last in May. At a recent Science Committee hearing on NWS contracting practices, he questioned the Commerce Department’s Deputy Assistant Inspector General about why his office failed to take action on NWSEO’s complaint about the pervasive and illegal use of personal service contracts (in lieu of hiring FTEs) at the NWS.
Beyer serves as Ranking Member (the senior Democrat) on the House Science Committee’s Subcommittee on Oversight. He is the former Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, and headed President Obama’s transition team for the Commerce Department. He served as U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland before running for Congress in 2014.
Beyer’s northern Virginia congressional district is home to 76,000 Federal employees. He is an original cosponsor of the Family Paid Parental Leave Act, which would provide six weeks of paid parental leave to Federal employees for the birth or fostering of a child. Earlier this year, he joined other Members of Congress from the Washington, DC area in introducing the FAIR Act, proposing a 3.8 percent pay raise to federal workers.
Rep. Beyer will address the Convention at 10 a.m., which will be held at the Old Town Alexandria Hilton, 1767 King Street, Alexandria, VA. Invitations to other Members of Congress are still pending.

Recruitment Incentive
Once someone joins the NWSEO, they recognize the value and strength of NWS employees working together for a cause and often become a member for life. Because of this, NWSEO offers the following recruitment incentive to our members:
Any NWSEO member who recruits two or more new members to join NWSEO using the 1187 form for payroll deduction (not by credit card) from August 1, 2014 to July 31, 2015, NWSEO will provide airfare, 3-nights lodging, and approved group meals for the 2015 convention at the Hilton Alexandria Old Town in Alexandria, Virginia. The name of the recruiter must be on the submitted 1187 in order for them to receive recruitment credit.
Recruitment is important this year, as many of our members have been promoted out of the Bargaining Unit and retirements are increasing. We need to increase membership to keep our organization strong. The NWSEO Recruitment page includes a wealth of information and speaking points to help with recruitment efforts.
NWSEO will keep you informed about convention plans in the coming months. Updates will be available on http://nwseo.org/convention.php. We hope to see you at the convention!
*In order for airfare to be reimbursed, you must provide documentation that it is the lowest available rate. Printed copies of airfares from Expedia or other travel sites will serve as documentation. AdTrav will not be accepted.
