NWSEO Sponsors Labor Luncheon for Rep. David Wu(May 12, 2010) NWSEO was one of six unions who co-sponsored a Capitol Hill luncheon for Rep. David Wu (D-OR), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Technology and Innovation of the House Science Committee on Tuesday, May 11. Legislative representatives of 15 different unions were in attendance, including representatives from the Letter Carriers, Longshoremen, Communications Workers, Teamsters, the National Treasury Employees Union and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees. NWSEO was represented by Richard Hirn, its General Counsel and Legislative Director. Rep. Wu sought input from the unions on ways to strengthen the economy and create job growth, particularly through technology. Wu and Hirn discussed the need for the National Weather Service to innovate the manner in which it delivers services, such as the use of smartphone applications like some private forecaster companies have developed and deployed. As an active member of the House Science Committee, Rep. Wu has been a strong supporter of the NWS and of NWSEO. He has been a major proponent of tsunami preparedness. Wu was the keynote speaker at the union's 2007 National Convention in Portland, Oregon. Pictured: NWSEO General Counsel Richard Hirn and Congressman David Wu (D-OR) Member News Index
